Abut us:-

The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens were created in 1970 on 18.5 hectares (45 acres) of Australian bushland, 1065 metres above sea level at the northern end of Blackheath, in the beautiful Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia.

It is managed and maintained by the Blue Mountains Rhododendron Society of NSW Incorporated, a community organization of volunteers with members throughout Australia.

It is a garden unique in the world – no other garden has attempted to plant exotics underneath their existing native bush on such a large scale.

The gardens have a series of nature walks leading to the valley floor and the lake with limited disabled access. The most colourful months are:

  • April-May: spectacular autumn displays from deciduous trees followed by camellias.
  • September-October: spring blossoms and massed bulbs displays.
  • October-November: peak blooming time for rhododendrons and azaleas.

But we’re open every day of the year! It has many tranquil areas that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

We look forward to welcoming you in our Gardens. Dogs on leashes are welcome, but please clean up after them.

The Google Map Reference is “Bacchante Rhododendron Gardens – Blackheath”.

How to get here:-

Blackheath is 120km (60 miles) – from Sydney on the Great Western Highway at the top of the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. If coming on foot from Blackheath Railway Station, cross the Highway at the pedestrian lights and turn left. Walk up to Sturt Street and turn right into it. Take the first left to Wentworth Street and follow it up to the end, curving around to the right into Bacchante St. Follow this to the end and you will be at the Gates into the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens.

By car, turn off the Highway into Hat Hill Road, turn left into Wentworth Street and follow the signs to the Gardens. The gates are open between 9am and 4pm and parking is available in the Gardens’ Car Park down the hill between those hours.

Yarra River at Warburton – Where ducks and dragonflies play.

I recently has five minutes to scratch myself and I immediately took off for a picnic by the Yarra River at Warburton.  While I was there, I had some adventures which I talk about on Episode 17 of Dig It Down Under.

The rhododendron gardens in Olinda boasts sweeping vistas, lush lawns, stunning ornamental lakes and a wonderful collection of rhododendrons and azaleas. On Episode 15 of Dig It Down Under, I chat with Glenn Maskell from Parks Victoria about the gardens. Here are some snaps that I took during the interview.
