Dig It Down Under – Vegetable Gardening

My patch and patches we’re following on the podcast..

Jon & Janet’s Herb Spiral

Posted on | July 12, 2009 | No Comments

Following Episode 12 of Dig It Down Under, where I talked about building a herb spiral, Jon and Janet emailed me to say “Here’s one we prepared earlier”.  I was so impressed with the light weight yet sturdy construction that they managed to build, that I asked for more information to share and thanks to Jon and Janet here it is:

Quoting Jon

“This was built with half recycled redwood fencing (we are in California) and half newly purchased fence boards.  We had a lot of extra clay dirt laying around and did not want to build a spiral on top of the ground as my wife has a bad back and doesn’t like bending over.  We built the spiral tall – the highest point is about 4.5 feet tall and the lowest point is 2 feet.  The boards are attached inside the spiral with plumbers tape and screws.

Rosemary, lavender, epasote, oregano, thyme and sage are on the top/dry side, basil, lemon balm, lemon verbena and cilantro on the lower/wet side.  I wanted to put a pond at the bottom but it didn’t really work out logistically..”

I’d have to say this project received ten (green) thumbs up from me.
